Bristol gallery hosts artist Stony, who died from a brain tumour

Antonio Russo, AKA Stony’s artwork will be showcased on 27 March at Bristol’s Studio 74 Gallery, during March’s Brain Tumour Awareness Month (BTAM)

The Stony event, titled ‘Time Is Precious’, will feature unseen works, a book launch, and the filming of a unique documentary charting Antonio’s legacy. In 2023 Antonio’s work was the main feature of The Brain Tumour Charity’s inaugural art exhibition TIME, at the Business Design Centre.

The London exhibition featured photographs, illustrations, paintings, scans and sculptures submitted by the community to help tell the stories of those affected by a brain tumour, as well as artwork from upcoming and renowned artists from around the globe – to help raise awareness of our mission to defeat brain tumours

A multi-award-winning artist, Antonio sadly passed away in June 2022, following a three- year battle with a glioblastoma brain tumour, first diagnosed in 2019. He underwent two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, participated in a clinical trial and Avastin treatment alongside chemotherapy.

During this time, he raised money for The Brain Tumour Charity, a charity very close to him after his dad passed away from the same type of Brain Tumour in 2007.

Stony’s art

Stony began painting and drawing at a very young age, however, being heavily dyslexic and autistic, he always found difficulty in expressing himself. He used art as his means of communication, channelling his excess energy to create detailed pencil drawings of the surrounding landscape.

Since Antonio’s passing, the family and art world have carried on his legacy through his thought-provoking artwork and used his infectious personality to create artwork collections, exhibitions, media content, documentaries and inspirational material to help and inspire other people.

Following on from the success of Antonio’s previous book, ‘God’s Plan’ which exceeded supply and demand, our family felt there was much more of his story to tell and share, so we bring you the newest edition to the book collection ‘Time Is Precious’.

Sally Liddle, Antonio’s partner said: “I promised Tony I would carry on from where we left off, and he is, and will continue to be, a successful artist that will carry on helping other people. We want to achieve all the amazing things he had planned but just didn’t get the chance to do in his short life”.

“It was important for Antonio that his artwork was seen. He was very passionate about people viewing his artwork and making an impact on the viewer, whether that was to influence, help or even just make people smile or laugh. He would always say and write things that others would think twice about saying.

“Because this was so important to him, we intend to make his paintings as accessible to everyone as possible. With his abstract artwork especially, he wanted to be on everything and everywhere!

“Alongside the artwork, we are keen to keep raising money and awareness around brain cancer. Tony never went anywhere without his video camera. We have hours and hours of footage of him painting, making music and endless amounts of memories that we have been working through, and we have exciting plans to produce a documentary about his life and work. And of course, there will be continue to be exhibitions with galleries and other partners across the globe”.
