Following a seizure at home in January 2023, just two months later Paul was diagnosed with a Brain Tumour. It was recommended that Paul undergo an awake Craniotomy in order to try and debulk or remove the tumour. Whilst it was not possible to remove much of the tumour (without risk of permanent paralysis), a biopsy was then completed which resulted in a diagnosis of a grade 2 oligodendroglioma. The result of this was to start an immediate course of treatment (radiotherapy and chemotherapy). The future is still uncertain but what this did spark was a huge desire from Paul to use his experience and the incredible support network of friends and family to start trying to help others in the future. This is what has lead to the idea of a supporters page: Firth’s Fundraisers.

Throughout the last few months the one thing that has kept up Paul’s resilience is the moto “you can only control what is controllable” and the thought of raising money to support crucial research projects that could one day find a cure for this cruel disease very much sits in that space. So far Paul and his friends and family have raised a huge amount of money through sponsored events like the Great North Run, as well as quizzes, raffles and most recently a charity coast to coast cycle ride.
