Join our Scientific Advisory Board

The Brain Tumour Charity is looking to recruit a patient, a carer, a parent and a young adult for its Scientific Advisory Board. As lay members on the board, you will have the opportunity to use your personal experience of the disease to assess research grant applications.

We are at the forefront of the battle to find a cure for brain tumours and to eliminate the effect that a brain tumour diagnosis can have on the quality of life of children and adults. As a funding body for brain tumour research, our aim is not just to fund the most promising scientific research possible but to make sure that what we fund is patient-friendly and aligned with our community’s needs.

We are currently looking for a patient, carer, parent and young adult to join our Scientific Advisory Board and be the voice of brain tumour patients throughout the assessment of grant applications.

Role Description

Lay members should be able to:

• read between 15 -30 lay summaries of research applications per year and form a detailed opinion about them
• attend at least one physical meeting per year in London (travel expenses paid and food provided)
• feel confident expressing your opinion to researchers and clinicians in writing (email) or in person

Requirements:

You should have:

• been affected by a brain tumour in one of the following ways: as a patient in adulthood, a patient in childhood, as a carer, or as parent of a child with a brain tumour (all applicants must be over 18)
• a higher education degree (or equivalent experience)
• demonstrable experience of putting your opinion forward (preferably within a professional setting)
• the ability to think beyond your personal experience, expressing the community’s collective needs

A scientific background is NOT a requirement for this role although it can be beneficial. Potential members should be at least three years beyond treatment or bereavement.

Lay membership on the Scientific Advisory Board is to run for three years with the possibility of renewal for an extra three years (unless there is a change in circumstances).
