In a profoundly moving and honest account, Sarah Pullen describes the heart-breaking reality of life after her son Silas’s brain tumour diagnosis in her new book, A Mighty Boy.
Silas was 10 when he was diagnosed with a high grade glioma in August 2012. Despite numerous treatments, he passed away just 16 months later.
A Mighty Boy traces the family’s journey from their first day at the hospital, coming to terms with a tumour they named ‘Bob’, through to Silas’s death and adjusting to life without him.
In the book, Sarah writes that her last conversation with Silas will be etched into her heart forever: “I really really love you Mummy.”
“Ditto,” I say rubbing his nose with mine. I hold my thumb and forefinger a small distance apart.
“But just a smidgen more.” He smiles. Those are the last words he ever speaks to us. Simple and perfect.’
Commenting on the book, Sarah Lindsell, The Brain Tumour Charity’s Chief Executive, said: “The Pullen family are an inspiration to us all. Sarah’s account reflects the brutal journey that so many of our community have to go on. We are so grateful to Sarah for raising awareness and speaking so openly and with such honesty about her experiences.“
Since Silas’s death, his family has raised more than £534,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity through their supporter group The Silas Pullen Fund.
A Mighty Boy: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief by Sarah Pullen, is published on August 17.
