In 2018, we formed the Scottish Steering Committee (SSC). A voluntary group that includes people living with a brain tumour, who have a loved one who’s been personally affected or work in neurology in Scotland.
The SSC was established to drive our policy, campaigning and influencing work in Scotland. There are now over 10 members involved in the Committee and more looking to join.
Last year, under the excellent chairing and leadership of Sandy Kennedy, the Committee were united in agreeing that achieving an earlier and faster diagnosis would be their main ambition.
Earlier this year, Sandy announced that he would be standing down as Chair of the SSC. We thank Sandy for his brilliant chairing since its creation and for all the achievements he guided the SSC towards. This includes the inception of the SSC itself and the creation of our Scottish Manifesto during the 2021 Scottish parliamentary elections.
Following Sandy’s announcement, we’re delighted to share that we have a new SSC Chair – David Garcia Jurado. A massive welcome to David. We can’t wait to see what the SSC achieves under his Chairmanship.
With David joining the SSC. We asked him a few questions to introduce him to the community.
Introducing the new SSC Chair
What drew you to apply and join the SSC?
“I was drawn to apply and join the Committee because of my personal journey with my son Lucas, who has been bravely fighting a terminal anaplastic ependymoma grade 3 brain tumour. His battle has inspired me to dedicate my efforts towards increasing funding for research into brain tumours. It’s a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart, and I feel a strong sense of mission to make a difference.”
What would you say are your main goals for the SSC during your tenure as Chair?
“During my time as Chair, my main goals are to help the Committee and The Brain Tumour Charity raise awareness to ensure better and faster diagnosis of this disease. I am also committed to significantly boosting funding and research into brain tumours, raising awareness about their devastating impact, and advocating for better treatment options. Lucas’ journey has shown me how critical these areas are, and I’m dedicated to driving real change and progress.”
What are you most passionate about outside your work?
“Outside of work, I’m most passionate about spending time with my family, especially with Lucas and my wife. This experience has taught me the immense value of quality and quantity time with loved ones. Additionally, I love challenging myself through various physical and mental challenges.
I also enjoy reading history, politics, and biographies, as they offer me valuable insights and perspectives.”
Do you have a message that you would like to share with current SSC members and other members of the community?
“To my fellow Committee members and the community, I want to say that I am really keen to meet you all, learn from you, and set clear priorities together. Cherish every moment with your loved ones and remember that nothing is too important to take time for them. Please support petitions to governments to push for more investment into research into brain tumours. Together, we can make a significant impact. Every effort counts, and your support means the world to many.”
